Yoga is constantly teaching me lessons. This morning my instructor was discussing something sad and began to appropriately tear up. But as quickly as the tears began to flow, they were gone. She did not want to cry in front of her students. I understand this behavior well because I partake in it often. Something triggers my sadness and I feel the emotion surfacing. But grown men don’t cry! So I stuff the feeling and avoid showing others my vulnerability.
While yoga is clearly about breath, I think it’s also about helping us become more aware of our emotions. As we breathe through poses, we also have the opportunity to feel our way through our bodies. We can learn where anger hides, sadness lingers, and love awaits. We can join breath and feeling in movements that free us from suffering, and learn to live more fully in the world.
