It was a split second moment, this woman walking across the street in the fog and rain with her umbrella. At the time I was oblivious as to why the scene had me firing off shots even before I knew what I was doing. All I remember is that I was moved in some strange way, like I had seen it all before.
As it turns out I had, well sort of. Growing up in Portland I had spent time downtown and came to know a bronze statue called Allow Me – also known as Umbrella Man! It’s the creation of John Seward Johnson II and was given to the city by an anonymous donor in the early 1980’s. It’s a life-sized statue of a man in a business suit holding an umbrella and hailing a cab. And if you were to see it at night, enveloped in a bit of fog and rain, you would understand why my unconscious jumped into action!
Life is so interesting when we really take the time to reflect on why certain scenes, sounds, smells, and feelings overcome us out of the blue. These connections are like little pieces of our life puzzle, magnetically wanting to be put together!
