While today is Memorial Day and we are honoring those who died for our country, the sad truth is that some of them shouldn’t have died! More than 22 vets commit suicide every day, in large part due to untreated trauma, depression, and substance abuse. Cases such as Levi Derby explain why. He handed an Afghan child a bottle of water and when she stepped forward to take it, walked on a landmine. You can imagine how such an event would eventually lead to suicide without proper treatment. Sadly, for those who serve our country, medical and mental health care fall dismally short of what many need. The recent scandal of vets dying while on waiting lists to get medical care is only the latest in a long history of failures by the VA. And I am sure it won’t be the last. The image today of the sun setting behind the Manhattan skyline is in honor of those who have died for our country. It’s also for those who will die today, or in the weeks ahead, if we don’t get our act together and do more for those who serve our country. Godspeed.
