If you look closely at the image today, you will see the illuminated “Watchtower” sign on the right, reminding me of Bob Dylan’s famous song All Along the Watchtower. But if you visit the city now, it’s no longer there!
The sign, which has been a New York icon for the past 70 years, was removed by the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s) following the sale of a number of their buildings to developers who plan to make the area into a “Tech Triangle”. There will likely be some hotels, restaurants and other shops thrown in, but the area is primarily being developed as a commercial melting pot for creative IT folks.
The buildings owned by the JW’s, some 34 in all, apparently will be sold off in time as the religious organization plans to move its operations to upstate New York. No question it will dramatically alter the landscape and economy of Brooklyn. I am just glad I snapped a shot of the historic sign before it was too late.
