This little red eyed tree frog was so cute looking up at me. Now, as I contemplate the image, I am struck by the idea that not only was he seeing me, but his little brain was interpreting me in some way!
We humans tend to selfishly see ourselves as separate from the animal kingdom, largely because we have been endowed with consciousness. Yet there are so many examples where animals appear to possess similar conscious capacities! If you have not seen the documentary Blackfish about Killer whales, and their reaction to having their babies taken from them to perform at SeaWorld, it’s heartbreaking. Or the story of Christian the lion, who was for sale in a London department store before being bought by a couple of guys interested in giving the animal a better life. They eventually released Christian into the wild, and then went back years later to see if they could spot their furry friend. Watch what happens when they spot a lion they believe to be Christian:
And then there is the story of Lawrence Anthony, the elephant whisperer!
While many believe consciousness differentiates animals and humans, when I am exposed to examples such as these, I cannot help but believe we are far more connected to the animal kingdom than we know!
