A few days ago, Kelly accidentally deleted some critical files off her iMac computer to the point that she needed to take her computer to the Apple store for help. The good news was that there was a fix – reinstalling the operating system! Of course this meant that she lost all her data, well, not really.
We have been backing up our computers for a few years now using Backblaze. We pay $5 month per computer that includes unlimited data and external drives! While the initial backup can take some time depending on how much data you have, once complete, I never notice it operating in the background.
There are many great online backup services, including: Carbonite, Mozy, IDrive and Crashplan. I used Mozy for a few years until they changed pricing strategies and motivated me to switch to Backblaze. While they all get the job done, there are differences in their pricing, interface, ease of use, and exactly what they will back up. What is important is not so much the program you select, but that you select one and use it! Online backup is a must because it protects you in case someone steals your computer and external drives, or if your house happens to get destroyed in some unfortunate natural disaster.
As Kelly recently found out, it’s a great feeling knowing that even if you crash your computer, you can easily get back to normal so long as you have a backup strategy in place!
