One of my submissions for the Portland Squared event was of five night shots around the Entertainment District. The image of the day is of the homeless shelter Right 2 Dream Too, and my favorite of the five in the series. Check out this cool video about the place.
Here are my other images in my Portland nightlife series:
The images got some positive feedback from the judges which was very cool! But they got hung up on the girls shot being a bit fuzzy and slammed me for not retaking it and getting a sharper image. While the comment is fair, I wanted to shoot them without a flash, which meant pushing my camera to its low-light limits. I probably could have gotten a better shot if I had been using a full-frame camera and the girls were not so lively, but I am still glad I included it even though it resulted in the judges passing on the series.
In the end, shooting Portland was not really about the contest. Although it was a good excuse to be out for an evening, it was more about being with myself in uncharted territory. I felt like a fish out of water around so many strangers from all walks of life just wanting to have a fun Friday night. And yet at the same time, as opportunities to engage arose, I felt a deepening sense of connection and oneness that is hard to describe.
