In high school I worked at a camera shop and became one of the lead printers when the owner invested in a one-hour color-film processing machine. It took up an entire room, had many tanks full of all kinds of smelly chemicals, and was a bear to clean. The finished photos would come out one end by a window where people could watch in awe – with the exception of one client! The local Police Department shot pictures of all the gruesome car accidents, homicides, and crime scenes that needed processing, but not for public view. So after the shop closed and no one was around, I would process their stuff in private. I got to know the detectives, and felt pretty cool knowing I was indirectly part of the team. Today with digital cameras all the nasty chemicals from the past are gone. I now can sit at my computer and process an image like the beautiful NYC skyline at night in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with just a few clicks of the button. Oh how times have changed!
