I never get bored shooting Time Square! Everytime I visit there are new billboards, street venders, interesting people watching, and cool light shows from all the advertisments. This time I decided to put my tripod away and shoot everything handheld with a high ISO (1600 or 3200). My Pentax K5-II handles low light really well, and no tripod means I can be more spontaneous and less discriminating of what I shoot. The image today had some post-processing in Topaz Adjust, but I like the final outcome.
COSTA RICA DAY 2: ARENAL VOLCANO
Today we spent the morning driving from our hotel by the airport to our first destination, La Fortuna. No one comes here for the city, it is the towering Arenal Volcano that is the main attraction! On one side it’s covered in lush green bushes, on the other it’s quite barren with lots of lava and scree fields. After checking into our hotel and having lunch, we visited the primary national park associated with the volcano. We decided to go it alone without a guide which was not a problem. The trail was well marked and we met a number of other nice tourists on the way up to the lava field where you get the best view of the mountain. Unfortunately, the top was covered in clouds, so our view was less than optimal. I am hoping that the few brief moments the volcano was illuminated by the sun will yield some cool images.
Where we might have benefited from a guide was on our way out of the park. We decided to take the longer route back to our pick-up spot, assuming we would be out before dark. But as luck would have it, we got to add a night tour to our daily agenda! I pulled out my headlamp and we negotiated the trail in the dark for the last 45 minutes. It was a bit scary because the trail never seemed to end. Our pickup was for 6 pm and we started to worry that we might not get out in time. The dark did bring out all sorts of interesting creatures that we had not seen on the way in. Giant frogs, bats feeding on bugs, and some unindentified mammal that blocked our trail were just a few of the surprises. Luckily, we made it out at 5:58 pm and found our driver! Although we did not see a jaguar, it was quite an adventure! We finished off the evening with a remarkable meal at the amazing Nayara Resort Hotel.
