A couple of weeks ago the American Psychological Association released its annual report on stress. Most concerning was that teen stress levels rival adults! In fact, the survey found that during the school year teens reported an average level of stress of 5.8/10 (ten being high) compared to adults average stress of 5.1. In addition, 31% of teens reported being overwhelmed and 30% said they were sad and depressed as a result of stress. What is going on with our society, this is crazy!
We are in a period of transition ourselves and no question have a heightened level of stress. If the reported average for adults is 5.1 we must currently must be in the 8 or 9 range – Yikes! And I really don’t want to guess where our son would be.
The good news is that we see the problem and have known for a long time that our lifestyle has contributed to stress outcomes similar to the findings in the report. And we are doing something about it! We are downsizing, paying off all debt, taking more time for travel and vacation, and beginning to focus on a very different kind of future.
I really encourage you to read the report if for no other reason than to gain a bit more understanding as to why our society feels so crazy much of the time. I also believe we absolutely need to do something NOW about teen stress, but honestly, I am not sure where to begin. It all seems so overwhelming.
