To conveniently get many places from our house requires a route that passes through a major construction project designed to upgrade a bridge (Sellwood Bridge Project). The repair work started last year and is not expected to be completed until early 2016. While I am all for upgrading bridges before the collapse, I have to admit the amount of time I have wasted sitting in my car due to this project, is enough for every one of my final hairs to fall out! I would not even want to guess how much time has been wasted collectively over the months from people sitting in their cars waiting to get through.
What is so infuriating is that I never quite know when there will be significant delays. I suppose I could go to their website before heading out the door each day, but thankfully I am not that anal! So instead I gamble whether to take my chances in hopes that delays will be minimal, or go another very circuitous route that gets tiresome.
The project has also cost us personally. Shortly after reduced speed signs were installed, cops set up speed traps to nail people for hundreds of dollars. Kelly and I (as well as many others) have for years habitually driven through the intersection at speeds of 45 mph. Now the posted speed is 25 mph, and one of us (not mentioning names here) has got dinged more than once for not paying attention to the change. While the tickets are fair, the bail amount on the citation is ridiculously high in my opinion. Perhaps they built into their budgeting model paying for part of the repairs from speeding tickets!
Dr. Seuss sure got it right when he wrote about The Waiting Place, but maybe he should have titled it The Painful Place!
