Not too many years ago, Trevor began Taekwondo at a local martial arts studio after completing a trial in an after school program. Who would have thought that just a few short years later he would be preparing for black belt testing! As parents we have appreciated the structure of the training, with a focus on family values, discipline, respect and self-control. It has been rewarding watching him evolve, gaining greater confidence with each higher earned colored-belt.
Seeing him often in his white Dobok, I am reminded of the popular television show Kung Fu that I watched as a kid. It followed a character named Caine, who was an orphaned American boy in China, is accepted for training at a Shaolin Monastery where he grows up to become a Shaolin Master. He returns to the states after trouble in China, and this is where the show picks up. I still remember the pilot episode where Caine is given a very special name by his Master in a flashback scene to his early training:
Master Po: Close your eyes. What do you hear?
Young Caine: I hear the water, I hear the birds.
Po: Do you hear your own heartbeat?
Po: Do you hear the grasshopper which is at your feet?
Caine: Old man, how is it that you hear these things?
Po: Young man, how is it that you do not?
The image today honors our own little grasshopper and his journey to black belt and beyond!
