On my recent trip to Costa Rica with my father, we stopped off at a bridge overlooking the Tarcoles River on our way to Monteverde. Below were perhaps a dozen large crocodiles sunbathing in the sand. The one in the image today was directly below me and quite an impressive beast measuring 10 – 12 feet long! While interesting laying in the sand, I really like seeing the creature with the background removed, something Adobe Photoshop handles quite nicely.
As a family we most often see crocodiles and other wild animals at our local zoo in Portland. While top-rated as zoos go, I am quite ambivalent about caging animals after watching Blackfish. I know zoos offer solid education to the public about animals, often increasing support for their protection. And they have breeding programs for endangered species and conduct research that helps breeds in the long run. But wild animals are wild for a reason. Caging them up no matter how well they are taken care of seems not right, and often very cruel. Many animals in zoos suffer from stress, boredom, and confinement. One study on elephants found they live much longer in the wild.
