No matter where you go in New York City you will find construction and maintenance work going on. When I first began photographing the city I saw this work as getting in the way of the beauty I was attempting to capture. All the trucks, workers, cranes, and dust were uninteresting and obstructions to navigate around.
Then one day I had been shooting along the Hudson River Greenway and coming up short. Nothing was interesting. I was bored and even questioning my own creative abilities. On the way to meet up with my family I happened upon a scene of workers on Greenwich Street that I had probably seen dozens of times before. But this time it was different! I saw an array of colors, lines, and textures that came alive. For a time I just sat and watched these hard-working men go about their business. And then I began taking pictures and realized what I had been missing!
