Despite the enormity of New York City, I’m reminded when I look to the sky of how small it all seems in comparison. As a kid I really struggled with the idea of infinity and how something could go on forever. It’s a concept that really is incomprehensible unless you step outside seeing the world through individual eyes. The great Sufi mystic Rumi tells us to:
“Become the sky. Take an axe to the prison wall. Escape.”
If you are familiar with Rumi you know he is talking about escaping all the trials and tribulations we struggle with as individuals, by awakening to the realization that we are far more than we realize! We get so caught up in our daily affairs we forget who we really are and why we are here. We are the sky, but only when we awaken to the truth of our being. I just wish taking an axe to our egos would be easier, but it’s the work of lifetimes.
