This past weekend Trevor and I visited a few stores investigating the latest gaming systems, namely those made by Microsoft and Sony. We spent two hours talking with a couple of older guys clearly in the know about gaming, and a store clerk who also was very knowledgeable about the systems as well. These were all adults who clearly had put their time in to playing video games, and did their best to help answer all my questions. So for all of you like me, who really know very little about these systems, here is my brief summary of what I learned.
THE TOP VIDEO GAMING SYSTEMS
1) MICROSOFT XBOX 360
pros: variety of games, good graphics and reasonable priced
cons: old technology not likely supported beyond 3 years
2) MICROSOFT XBOX ONE
pros: amazing technology and graphics, a system you could grow into
cons: limited number of games available and very expensive unit
3) SONY PLAYSTATION 3 (competes with Xbox 360)
pros: possibility that Sony will put all past games online, good graphics
cons: competes with Xbox 360 and has limited lifespan as well
4) SONY PLAYSTATION 4 (competes with Xbox One)
pros: amazing graphics, less expensive Xbox and some consider it more powerful than Xbox One
cons: no backward compatibility with older systems, less impressive inventory of games than Xbox
The decision as to which to get starts with how it will be used. If multi-player games are important, than the system to buy is the one all your friends have, because games don’t work across systems. If multi-player is not overly critical, then perhaps cost is the next most important factor. Money not being an issue, the newer systems are the way to go. But if keeping costs down is necessary, the older systems provide tremendous bang for the buck. As to whether to purchase Sony or Microsoft, both have similar games, comparable experiences, and personal preference will likely be the deciding factor.
If we were to get a system today what would we purchase? Probably the Xbox 360.
