In our hometown of Portland, we have been watching with excitement as the new 135 million dollar Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Bridge is being constructed across the Willamette River. The cable-stayed bridge is the first in Portland since 1973, and interestingly uses the same design as the Brooklyn Bridge constructed in 1883! I guess some designs never get old. Back then the cost to build the bridge was a mere $15.5 million (although 27 people lost their lives building it). What a difference 100 years makes. The new bridge, which will carry Max Light Rail, the Portland Streetcar, buses, bikes and pedestrians, is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2015.
If you visit New York you owe it to yourself to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge! It’s still among the most photographed icons in New York and offers many great vantage points to view the skyline. For the image today, I converted a color image to black and white, and then played with the detail a bit to enhance the look. It will be fun to shoot the new bridge in Portland when it’s completed and compare them!
