When I was growing up my favorite books were those from American children’s author and illustrator Richard Scarry. His series, Busytown, based on anthropomorphic animal characters doing all the things humans do, has sold over 100 million copies!
When Trevor was a toddler and we introduced the books to him, I was amazed at how many of the scenes came back to me almost instantly as we paged through the various volumes. His work really was timeless! Even though illustrators have gone through his books and removed offensive gender, racial and religious prejudices, they hold their own in a world that is now dominated by technology.
Mr. Scarry died of a heart attack in 1994 and the image today is posted in his memory. I wonder what Busytown would look like today probably a lot more busy!
