After a long night of shooting I usually roll into bed around 2 am, doing my best not to wake Kelly and Trevor who have been asleep already for hours. I set my alarm and know at best I will get 3 or 4 hours of sleep before heading out again to catch the sunrise in the morning. I quietly slip on my clothes, grab my gear, and make my way to the subway station. I know exactly which stop positions me close to the Brooklyn Bridge. Then I hope I see something interesting, like the morning light illuminated by the rain. Although I am very sleepy, I am grateful for the day and the beautiful world we call home.
COSTA RICA DAY 1: SAN JOSE
My father and I arrived late last night in San Jose, Costa Rica for a ten-day tour of the country. Our last big trip together was to Asia, visiting Thailand and Nepal two decades ago! We are excited to be back on the road engaging in a new adventure with our eye on picture taking! Today we will drive from our hotel in San Jose to La Fortuna, a small city at the base of Arenal Volcan, one of the many active volcanoes in the region. We are staying two nights and will do our best to see all the sites and hopefully grab some cool photos!
I am also looking forward to an extended time of reflection, away from the normal home routine. While I wish Kelly and Trevor could be with us, he has school and both would get bored quickly of our constant picture taking. One of the great things about traveling is that the new scenery, culture, and people provide numerous opportunities for me to also reflect on my contemplative journey. To meditate on the big questions of life, consider what is truly important, and come to know myself in a deeper way. The image today is a reminder that life is about crossing bridges, some well known to us, others hanging from trees awaiting our arrival!
