You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose. – Dr. Seuss
What is it with kids these days always saying they are bored? I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t hear from my son that he is bored and that he expects me to find a way out of his boredom. Sadly, I have learned from experience that boredom is the self-induced state of mind when not engaged in screen time. How can playing outside, reading engaging books, building forts, creating new inventions or chess rival staring at a screen and getting points for shooting plant zombies? So all of my suggestions for curing boredom fall on deaf ears.
We live in such a crazy world where as parents our nemesis has become screen time! Although we allow only one-hour of screen time per day, it amazes me how much influence that hour has over the rest of the hours in the day. It’s like the brain keeps thinking about the games, the points, the online players, and can’t move on to do other things. Our kids are growing up in a world where they may not be able to steer themselves in any direction they choose, because gaming companies have figured out how to steer them right back where they want them to be – playing their games!
