Today I had my yearly blood draw for monitoring my health and the technician was a woman who had done it before. I’m not ashamed to admit that I am somewhat of a baby when it comes to blood draws, I just don’t like having them done. Even my son is far more braver than I am. But when I realized she would be doing the poking, I felt a wave of relief.
Perhaps because I was more relaxed this time than in times past, I became curious about her technique. Why don’t they just teach it to all technicians I wondered? So I asked…
“I have been drawing blood for 46 years,” she said, “And during that time, I have learned a few tricks,” she added with a smile.
I think a special place in heaven should be reserved for people who dedicate so much of their life energy to reducing pain and misery in others. I only hope she is around for another 46 years for my sake.
