The image today is of my final submission in the Portland Squared event. Because I processed it beyond simple exposure and sharpening adjustments, I didn’t think it qualified for the documentary category so I submitted it as fine art. But the judges immediately commented that it should have been the former category, which was a bit confusing given the rules. So it was passed over within seconds of viewing which was disappointing given that it is one of my favorite shots from the event.
I spent perhaps twenty minutes talking with this very nice man about the events that brought him to Portland. In short, he journeyed all the way from Georgia to get his dog which apparently had been wrongly kept by an ex-girlfriend. Hard not to respect a guy who invested weeks in hitchhiking to Portland for his best friend. I also liked that he was very patient with my picture taking and did his best to hold still so I didn’t have to use a flash. While many people asked for money during the evening, he never did which is why I gave him some!
