While I know that Christmas means many things these days, it’s really a day set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus. No question the Son of God is the reigning leader of religious faith throughout the world, since Christians account for the largest group of faith-followers around the globe (31.5% according to Pew). So is Christmas meant to be just a big birthday party? Huh, no!
Christmas is really a time that Christians want us to reflect on the message of Jesus. What was it exactly that this young man preached so many centuries ago?
I often reflect on what it would have been like to be the Son of God, have this amazing knowledge and news to share about the essence of our life on earth, and then come to find out that sharing it was not so easy! Why? People back then were busy with their lives, surviving, off hunting food, forging tools out of metal, dressing kids, making supper not so different than life today!
To be fair, the message – that we are God – is not something that is easily comprehended. So instead of just saying that, Jesus told Parables in hopes that the message would become clear. But even today, centuries later, it seems that what Jesus wanted us to know – that the Kingdom of God is in everything and everywhere – remains elusive for all but those willing to take the contemplative journey.
The image today taken on my recent trip to Costa Rica celebrates Jesus and the incredible challenge he had back then to convince people of what was true.
